Are you growing Jaboticaba yet? Well, you should be!

Everything about this tree is awesome. It can grow with little space, less than ideal lighting, low maintenance, produce an abundance of amazing fruits, and just looks AWESOME. From the way it flowers and fruits up and down its trunk, to how striking every part of the tree looks, especially when it's flushing new growth.

From beginner growers and beyond, we recommend Jaboticaba for everyone.

Over the last several years, there has been an explosion of different Jaboticaba making its way into the US. Several species, hybrids, and countless non-identified species (indicated with sp.).

Something to consider when collecting various Jaboticaba is there can sometimes be variability between seed grown trees, some species more than others, like phitrantha. You will also find collectors grafting all types, but many times they are grafted from seed-grown trees, which means they, too, will vary from other grafted trees of the same kind.

The three most common types: Sabara, Escarlate, and Red Hybrid are stable, so whether seed-grown or grafted, they will be identical.

Jaboticaba can fruit in as early as 2-3 years, but some can take over 20 years! Red Hybrid and Escarlate are known to fruit quickly, whereas Sabara may take 8-12 years.

Overview

Jaboticaba is a truly unique and highly prized tropical fruit tree known for its grape-like fruit that grows directly on the trunk and branches. Native to Brazil, jaboticaba produces round, dark purple fruit with juicy, sweet flesh and a rich, complex flavor. Its striking growth habit, combined with excellent fruit quality, makes it one of the most sought-after fruit trees for home gardeners and collectors alike.

Fruit Characteristics

Jaboticaba fruit resembles a grape in size and appearance, with thick purple skin and translucent, juicy pulp. The flavor is sweet with subtle floral notes and a pleasant balance of acidity. Fruit is best enjoyed fresh but is also used in jams, wines, and desserts. Mature trees can fruit multiple times per year under favorable conditions.

Growth Habit & Ornamental Value

This species forms a slow-growing, compact evergreen tree with smooth, mottled bark and dense foliage. The dramatic display of fruit growing directly from the trunk makes jaboticaba an exceptional ornamental specimen, well suited for patios, courtyards, and tropical landscapes. It responds well to pruning and container culture, especially when grafted.

Growing Conditions

Jaboticaba performs best in warm climates and prefers:

  • Full sun to partial shade

  • Well-draining, slightly acidic soil

  • Regular watering and consistent moisture

While it appreciates protection from frost, grafted jaboticaba trees fruit earlier and are more manageable for home gardeners compared to seed-grown plants.

Ideal for Home Gardeners & Collectors

Jaboticaba is ideal for gardeners seeking something truly special. Grafted selections allow home growers to enjoy fruit sooner, while top-tier varieties ensure excellent flavor and performance. Its rarity, beauty, and productivity make it a centerpiece tree in any tropical fruit collection.
