Figs! They come in all sizes, colors and FLAVORS!

While many people's experiences with figs are Fig Newtons, nothing compares to a fresh top tier fig. Some can explode in your mouth with a juicy fruity jam or be like a syrupy honey or even dry on the tree into a rich, chewy berry jam.

Whichever way you like them, they are simply perfection! Figs are another one on the must grow list. Aside from being hardy and easy to grow, they can be quite prolific.

An important consideration when selecting a variety of Fig is the type. And the critical question is whether or not you have the fig wasp in your location.

Three types of Female Fig:

  • Common: Do not require pollination and are considered parthenocarpic
  • Smyrna: Require pollination from a Caprifig
  • San Pedro: Produces a Breba crop which does not require pollination, and a main crop which does require pollination.

Breba form on last year's growth and ripen at the beginning of the following season. The main crop, which forms on the new season's growth, ripens late summer and fall.

What is even crazier is that the ripened fig of a type that does not require pollination will be different when pollinated.

There are more fig varieties than you probably want to know about, so we've collected many of the best for you!

Overview

Fig trees are one of the easiest and most rewarding fruit trees for home gardeners. Valued for their sweet, honey-like fruit and dependable production, figs thrive in a wide range of climates and require minimal care once established. Native to the Mediterranean region, fig trees have been cultivated for thousands of years and remain a favorite for backyard orchards and edible landscapes.

Fruit Characteristics

Fig fruit varies in color from green and yellow to purple and brown depending on the variety. The flesh is soft, sweet, and rich, often described as honeyed with subtle berry notes. Figs are excellent for fresh eating and also well suited for drying, baking, preserves, and savory dishes.

Growth Habit & Landscape Value

Fig trees form a medium-sized deciduous tree with large, distinctive leaves that add bold texture to the landscape. They can be grown as a tree or multi-stem shrub and respond very well to pruning, making them easy to maintain at a manageable size. Figs also perform well in large containers.

Growing Conditions

Fig trees are adaptable and easy to grow, performing best with:

  • Full sun

  • Well-draining soil

  • Moderate watering

Once established, figs are drought tolerant and low maintenance. They are heat tolerant and cold hardy in many regions, making them suitable for a wide range of home gardens across the United States.

Ideal for Home Gardeners

Figs are an excellent choice for beginners and experienced gardeners alike. Their forgiving nature, early fruiting, and exceptional flavor make them one of the most reliable fruit trees for home orchards.
